Pre Puberty Hockey Development – The Case for Multi-Sport Exposure

Pre Puberty Hockey Development – The Case for Multi-Sport Exposure

Coaching, Development
Pre Puberty Hockey Development - The Case for Multi-Sport Exposure Hockey is a unique blend of speed and power endurance, strength, timing, decision-making, creativity, stamina, anticipation, concentration, coordination and hockey specific skill. It is a beautiful game that essentially comes down to the following variables - as players, we are either tracking the puck, the opponent, or we are escaping the opponent, with the goal of putting the puck in the net. The players who excel at this game are those that can efficiently control their centre of gravity, while processing the above attributes and their orientation in space, faster than the rest. Whether the goal is to make the NHL, CHL, AAA, gain new friends, learn life skills, etc., the recipe for success in hockey in any case is…

The 200 Foot Player

The 200 Foot Player

Coaching, skating
The 200 Foot Player Many young players dream of playing at that “next” level, and will do whatever necessary to get there. While your passion and determination are certainly there, are you sure you are focusing on improving the things that not only get you there, but keep you there? When evaluating players whether it be during camp, games, or practices we seldom talk about a player’s goals and assists. Now, don't take this as me saying goals and assists don't matter. They undoubtedly do. But the reality is that for many players, the overwhelming majority of the conversation has very little to do with these factors. High Performance Living Symposium Review

High Performance Living
High-Performance Living Symposium Review One of the things I enjoy doing most is learning from intelligent individuals, who would care less about the sport of hockey. Taking in information and learning outside the constructs of the hockey world allow me to challenge my own assumptions and beliefs, and let me see things from a different perspective. This past weekend I had the opportunity to visit New York City and attend the High-Performance Living Symposium, hosted by Equinox. The day was full of events where we got to engage industry leaders in movement, nutrition, and regeneration. Topics of discussion included: the future of high-performance lifestyles nutrition strategies to maximize genetic potential and brain health new findings in sleep science the importance of regeneration, recovery, and pre-covery designing high-performance training programs for…

Coaching Clinics and Developing Well-Rounded Athletes

Coaching
Coaching Clinics | Developing Well-Rounded Athletes It has been a busy month for Evolution Hockey working with Minor Hockey Associations, having the UofM Bison Men’s hockey season in full swing, and running skating and skill development clinics for Hockey Manitoba. In reference to my previous post on Hockey Canada, it is so exciting to see coaches at the grassroots levels show more and more willingness to learn and get better. Our time attending Hockey MB Clinics and  Evolution hosted clinics have taught us many great things. It lets us have great discussions on ways to teach and improve skating. Moreover, it allows us to talk about how these strategies can be used at every level. Furthermore, this collaborative effort has allowed us to design and implement long-term development programs for…

Hockey Skills Canada Experience

Hockey Skills Canada Experience

Coaching
Hockey Skills Canada Experience A few weeks ago, I was selected along with 15 other coaches to attend the inaugural Hockey Skills Canada Coach Program in Calgary. Interestingly, what was clear from day 1 is that the practices of Hockey Canada are changing and we were going to be challenged. Our task was to share our perspective, ideas, and vision to help influence and drive this shift. Openness and willingness to grow In short, I can say that this collaborative opportunity was awesome. This was a  great experience. We all checked our Egos at the door and had many positive discussions.  For the first time, I witnessed the Hockey world show openness and a willingness to change old ways.  (though this is something I have been witnessing in the Strength and…

The blend of physical and mental training has been extremely resourceful in helping me reach my goals every year. All of his on ice skill sessions are aimed to prepare the highest degree of dynamic skating and skill specific training for hockey. Riley continues to introduce new techniques and details to my game, and has the ability to demonstrate every drill which is extremely helpful when your trying to master it yourself.
